What if God Intended Marriage to Make us Holy?

So many people nowadays have this expectation that marriage is to make them happy. Hence the high divorce rate. LOL! But really that isn't funny, in fact it is very sad.

I've been reading a very insightful book on the subject called Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas. He presents the question, What if God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy? A very good question indeed. And ironically how much happier we will be if we look at our marriage as a spiritual discipline...a chance to mature in our faith...a chance to die to self...a chance to model the relationship between Christ and the Church.

What an incredible opportunity to grow through a simple change in attitude.

I am thankful for the incredible husband that God has blessed me with and what wonderful opportunities He gives us each to grow as we offer our lives up to Him and live for His glory instead of our own gratification.

Hey girl I had to remind myself who you were. It has been awhile.
Good to have you back.
I thought this post was good.
I can look back now and see that God was using my marriage to bring me to a certain place in Him.
He promises to work all things together for our good when we are walking toward His purpose.
For me for a long time that was our marriage-it was surely a good work in progress.
Thank God that now we are moving forward together toward the Lord in love.
Sounds like this book you are reading is good.
Good to hear from you again.
Have a blessed day!

Amen - I know that Paul said it would be better (if in ministry) not to be married, but how much more beautiful is the Christian walk than when we've learned to die to ourselves and give to our family around us? What a great experience! I'm thankful, too. :)

I think you are absolutely right, Sharon. Everything in this life is to make us holy, too. And I'm learning there is great joy in obedience, even in really trying times. Thanks for sharing.
